Not Every Friendship Has to Be Purposeful and That’s Okay

I don’t know when friendship became a checklist.
One day you’re sending memes and planning random hangouts, and the next, you’re asking yourself, “Is this friendship purposeful?”
These days, it feels like you need vision boards, joint goals, or shared prayer points to justify being close.
And honestly? I’m not sure I like it.
Lately, friendship has started to feel… transactional.
More about what you can do for someone and what they can do for you, instead of just being friends.
Hear me out: I genuinely believe friendship doesn’t always have to be about growth plans, accountability check-ins, or deep spiritual alignment.
It can be — and it’s beautiful when it is — but it doesn’t have to be the standard.
Not every connection needs a “purpose” or shared destination.
Sometimes, just liking someone, enjoying their presence, and feeling safe around them is more than enough.
I truly admire growth-minded friendships. It’s powerful when people challenge each other and grow together.
But that kind of intensity shouldn’t replace affection, ease, or the quiet joy of simply being around someone who gets you.
We don’t talk enough about the friendships that don’t come with big titles or “roles” — the ones that don’t look productive but still mean the world.
I’ve had friendships like that.
We didn’t pray together every week or build projects side by side.
But we laughed. We held space for each other. We shared silence and the soft, ordinary stuff.
And those friendships? They were real. They still are.
I used to think that when a friendship wasn’t growing in the same direction, maybe it had run its course.
But now I’m learning that growth doesn’t always have to sync.
Sometimes people grow apart in purpose but still stay rooted in love — and that’s okay, too.
I won’t lie, I’ve lost some really good people because I thought, “We’re not aligned anymore,” or “Maybe this was just for a season.”
But now I think a simple “Hey, I’ve missed you” might have changed everything.
Sometimes, it’s the small things that keep friendships going:
“Want to hang out this weekend?”
“There’s this Marvel movie I know you’d love, let’s go see it.”
“I’m having an event — it’d mean a lot if you came.”
It can be a paint-and-sip after six months of silence.
An annual December catch-up.
A lazy Saturday binge-watching K-dramas and talking about people’s bad character for hours.
Friendship is beautiful — in all its forms.
If you have a circle that’s growth- and vision-minded, amazing.
If you have people who love you for your raw, unfiltered self — that’s just as precious.
And if you’re blessed with both? Absolute gold.
Whatever your circle looks like, I hope you don’t take ease for granted.
I hope you check in on the ones who love you softly.
And I hope you’re a kind, open place for the people in your life — not just when they “add value,” but even when they’re simply there.
Because sometimes, that’s more than enough.
